Alamogordo Residents Sound Off on Sustainable Green Spaces

Keep Alamogordo Beautiful (KAB) recently conducted a survey to gather community input on the City of Alamogordo's Sustainable Green Spaces Program. The survey, which ran from October 26 to November 30, 2023, received 118 responses from Alamogordo residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Demographics of Respondents

  • Age: 18-24 (6.8%), 25-34 (19.5%), 35-44 (14.4%), 45-54 (16.9%), 55-64 (22%), 65+ (20.3%)

Green Space Usage and Preferences

Survey respondents indicated that they frequently use green spaces in Alamogordo, with parks (84%) being the most popular type of green space, followed by trails (65.5%) and natural areas (42.9%). When asked what types of green spaces they would like to see more of in Alamogordo, respondents expressed a strong desire for more community gardens (64.7%)gardens (58.8%), and trails (52.9%).


Priorities for Green Spaces

Accessibility, amenities, maintenance, and environmental sustainability were identified as Alamogordo's top priorities for green spaces. Respondents emphasized the importance of making green spaces accessible to all residents, regardless of age, ability, or location. They also called for more amenities, such as restrooms, shade structures, and playgrounds, to enhance the usability of green spaces. Additionally, respondents stressed the need for proper maintenance to keep green spaces clean, safe, and attractive.


Barriers to Green Space Access

Lack of awareness of green spaces (52.1%)lack of amenities (50.4%), and lack of safety (31.9%) were identified as the most significant barriers to accessing and enjoying sustainable green spaces in Alamogordo. Respondents also expressed concerns about the distance to green spaces and the need for transportation options.


Willingness to Support Green Spaces

A majority of respondents (53.8%) indicated that they are willing to pay a small amount for green spaces in Alamogordo, while 30.3% are willing to pay a moderate amount. Additionally, nearly 70% of respondents expressed a willingness to volunteer their time to help maintain green spaces.

Survey Respondents Share Their Suggestions and Comments


In addition to the quantitative data gathered from the survey, respondents also provided a wealth of suggestions and comments about Alamogordo's green spaces. These suggestions and comments were grouped into the following categories:


  • Public compost and recycling spots should be added: Respondents expressed a desire for more public composting and recycling options to help reduce waste and promote sustainability.


  • Increase tree planting: Many respondents called for more trees throughout the City, both in medians and green spaces. Trees provide shade, reduce heat, improve air quality, and beautify the City.


  • Partner with With Many Hands: Several respondents suggested that the City should partner with With Many Hands, a local organization working to create community gardens and promote sustainable food production.


  • Focus on maintenance: Respondents emphasized the importance of maintaining existing green spaces, including parks, trails, and medians. Proper care can help ensure these spaces are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all residents.


  • Add more amenities: Respondents expressed a desire for more amenities in green spaces, such as restrooms, shade structures, playgrounds, and exercise equipment. These amenities can make green spaces more inviting and attractive to users.


  • Address safety concerns: Some respondents expressed concerns about safety in some green spaces, particularly at night. They suggested that the City should increase patrols and improve lighting in these areas.


  • Create a comprehensive green space plan: Respondents called for a comprehensive plan for Alamogordo's green spaces, which would take into account the needs of all residents and stakeholders. This plan should include strategies for creating new green spaces, improving existing spaces, and ensuring long-term sustainability.


The suggestions and comments from survey respondents provide valuable insights into the community's vision for Alamogordo's green spaces.
